About EquityMoat
What it is
EquityMoat is a free website that reads ten years of a company's filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and turns them into trends, red flags and Buffett-style value checks. It covers about 10,400 US-listed companies, plus mutual funds and ETFs, in English and Spanish. There is no sign-up and there are no ads.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure comes from the company's own filings on SEC EDGAR: the financial statements in its annual reports, its filing history and its insiders' Form 4 reports. A company's figures are looked up the first time someone opens it and kept for up to a day. The lists of companies and of the S&P 500, and the industry figures, are rebuilt from SEC data every month. Per-share figures from before a stock split are adjusted for it, and a restated year uses the latest filing.
How the numbers are checked
More than 800 automated tests run on every change: business rules on hand-built filings, real saved filings for tricky companies, and every page in a real browser, accessibility included. A separate audit compares the live site's yearly figures with SEC's own and recomputes every value and check independently.
What it doesn't do
It isn't investment advice and doesn't recommend stocks. It has no live share prices: enter a price to test the valuation, or follow the link to the price on Google Finance. The figures are only as good as the filings: companies sometimes tag numbers in unusual ways, so check the original filing before relying on one.
