How to read it: operating margin is what the typical company keeps from each sale after making the product and running the business. Gross margin counts only the cost of making it, so an industry that spends heavily on research or selling (biotech, software) can show a high gross margin and still lose money. A high return on equity means the business earns a lot on the money owners have put in. Medians describe the typical company, not the best one: a strong company can sit in a weak industry, and the other way round.
